National Museums Liverpool’s most southerly outpost, Sudley House is a former mansion originally owned by yet another Liverpudlian philanthropist (see also: Lady Lever gallery). It stands in its own grounds in the pretty Mossley Hill area.

The gallery has a number of rooms containing the house’s original collections of art and furniture and explains the origins of Sudley House and the Holt family, who bequeathed the house to the city, through interactive multimedia displays.

Sudley House is set up to cater for children, with rooms given over to activities for youngsters, while there’s a typical NML cafe too. There are also well-maintained grounds for a brisk walk and picnic areas.

Sudley House also has seasonal exhibitions alongside its static displays, which have previously included marriage gowns and historical fashion.

The static displays largely consist of 18th and 19th century art and includes works by Gainsborough, Landseer, Millais, Turner and Rosetti.
